As far back as 1997, Coca Cola experimented with vending machines that took payment by text message and Smart and Globe are credited with the first mobile money transfer system in the Philippines in 2002. Neither of these schemes enjoyed the success of M-Pesa however. Near Field Communication (NFC) has been in wide spread use for several years to pay for goods in Japan and South Korea. A Bill Gates Foundation $12.5 million grant is helping to develop mobile banking in Africa, Latin America and Asia and services are also due to be launched in Tanzania, Afghanistan, South Africa and India in the near future.
