To the ordinary consumers, Fujifilm Holdings Corporation is best known for its photographic and imaging products like Fuji digital cameras.  This Tokyo-based company, however, is much more than that. Fujifilm has also distinguished itself in office equipment products, flat panel display, medical systems, and life sciences.  The company counts on 223 subsidiaries and over 70,000 employees worldwide for the manufacture, distribution and product research.

Formerly operating as Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd., the company was the prime-mover of the development of Japan’s first electronic computer, called FUJIC, which saw completion in 1956.  In more contemporary times, Fujinon lenses helped shape moviemaking history with  a Fujifilm company supplying high-definition lenses in the filming of Darth Vader scenes shot in total darkness for the George Lucas’  Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.  A high-definition Fujinon Cine lens was developed for these particular scenes which are difficult to film with regular movie camera equipment.  What the Fujinon HD Cine lens delivered were images expressing texture and reproducing subtle black hues.   The high performance of these lenses enabled the Fujifilm company Fujinon to win an Emmy Award for Technology and Engineering.

The same outstanding technology is at work in Fuji digital cameras, particularly in the Fuji Finepix models which have set the trend in compact models excelling in low-light shooting conditions. Among the advanced technologies that go into these Fuji compacts is the Super CCD EXR sensor, which is one of the selling points of the Finepix F200 EXR.  The sensors of these Fuji digital cameras bring in a versatile feature that helps the photographer adapt to three different shooting environments.

There is a fine capture mode, wherein these Fuji Finepix cameras employ 12-megapixel resolution of the EXR pixel array to capture images in bright colours up to the smallest detail.  For high-contrast shooting situations, a photographer can switch to the dual capture mode wherein the Fuji compact reads two images and merges them into a single image of up to 800% in wide dynamic range to produce pictures that reveal subtleties and shadow, and eliminate washout in the brightest areas.  In low-lighting situations, the Super CCD EXR is ready to take charge with its pixel-fusion mode, high-sensitivity features and pixel-binning capability wherein two pixels are combined into one super-pixel.

There are two different modes by which to access these Super CCD EXR modes.  One is the priority mode which allows the photographer to manually set any of the EXR modes suitable to the shooting condition.  The other is the auto mode wherein the Fuji digital cameras automatically set the best EXR mode for the shooting situation to deliver the perfect image.

Great camera Fantastic Lens!
After what seemed like weeks looking through endless reviews that carved the D3000 and D5000, and my decision after reading the thoughts of Ken Rockwell on Live-view and video mode. However … Ken Rockwell stated previously, a complete verification that is moving the D3000 for a suggested the D40 or D60 … Seems to have changed his mind since then book a bit ‘.

My thoughts … Now, this camera is a step for me a Fuji FinePix S7000, a great camera, but with significant limitations. As an avid photographer, but just an amateur, I think I made a good choice, and made some recordings have been impressive (see the images of the customer). The great thing about the D3000 is its use as a learning tool for guiding characteristic modes. I think that opens up new possibilities for users of a new digital SLR for technical to understand. My advice is that the experiment … Machine is a great experiment, but leads to a rewarding hobby.
The next step for me … The objective VR 55-200 mm.

By the way …. Make sure that the kit comes with a lens VR … Splendid!

Some of the negative comments are abusive, this is a good value for money camera does not leave disappointed. I wanted a digital SLR camera for ages and could not pay, that was a real pleasure to see. The photos are great, the target VR is worth the price of the camera (IMO). I’m not complaining about this camera, except I’m used to use the LCD as a viewfinder for the camera, first, it took a little ‘getting used to not having. But only a minor point.

This camera has opened a new world of digital SLRs. Macro lenses have been purchased, and a remote control and tripod. I love this camera.

How to Take Great 3D Pictures

Yet while pointing and shooting Fuji’s new 3D camera is simple enough, getting good 3D pics requires knowledge of some distinctive photo principles. The reporters, editors, and photographers on hand at the event found this out even before Fuji turned them loose with loaner 3D cameras for the night.

During a demo of the camera, Fuji staff delivered a few tips. First, you should choose a subject with multiple focal points, and you should then hone in on a focal point relatively close to you as an “anchor point.” On the other hand, the anchor point should be at least six feet away from you.

Trying to keep all this in mind, the journalists then shot 3D videos of people and objects in the museum, and of scenes in the park outside the windows. When they were done with that, they plugged their cameras into multivendor 3D TVs, donned the stereographic glasses, and eyed the results of their 3D work.

The W3 will carry an list price of 9.95, much more than what you’d pay for most point-and-shoot 2D digital cameras.

Yet if you’re ready to do more than point-and-shoot, the W3 is packed with features for advanced 2D and 3D photography, said Troy. With TeleWide Simultaneous Shooting, for example, you can zoom in on a subject while simultaneously taking a wide angle shot of the same scene. Another feature, Interval 3D Shooting, is designed for capturing 3D effects in far away subjects.

By switching a built-in parallax control from auto mode into manual mode, you can increase or decrease the 3D effect by fine tuning the sense of depth and the alignment of the images.

How to Use the Camera with a PC

What if you don’t own a 3D TV, and you want to use the 3D camera with a PC instead? If you have a desktop PC, you can buy a Zalman monitor, which will let you ditch the 3D glasses for viewing photos in 3D. Also, 3D-enabled laptops are now becoming available from makers like Toshiba that will let you do the same.

If you don’t mind wearing the 3D glasses as you gaze at your PC, you can purchase NVidia’s 3D Vision, a kit that comes with the glasses plus a 3D graphics card. With the NVidia approach, you’ll also need a PC monitor with a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz, Troy noted.

Fuji’s latest 3D camera supports HDTV, but at 720p resolution, as opposed to the higher 1080p. Will Fuji step to the higher resolution?

The answer is that Fuji hasn’t decided yet. The 1080p technology would be costlier, and Fuji isn’t certain that the added resolution would be all that detectable to most users, Troy suggested. “But we’re always looking at new ways to improve our cameras,” he told me.

The Fuji Finepix S1000fd is a 10 megapixel super zoom camera with a 12x optical zoom lens. 

Why Buy the Fuji Finepix S1000FD?
The Finepix S1000fd is that bit cheaper than most super zoom models. A large part of the reason for this is that it has a shorter zoom and one or two less features than some of its competitors. The upside of the Finepix S1000fd not having every bell and whistle is that it helps to make the camera that bit easier to use.

Outdoor 1 (Medium Zoom)
The Finepix S1000fd handles the colours and darker areas of the photos well. I am impressed with the definition showing on the name of one of the boats in the centre of the photo. Sharpness is good too. Some detail is lost from the brightest areas of the shot where the sun falls on the boat.

Outdoor 2 (No Zoom)
Focusing is roughly in line with most other digital cameras in this shot. In terms of focusing this is the toughest test I run. The more distant parts of the scene are softer, but the majority of the shot is sharp enough. I would like to have seen greater brightness in the shot.

Outdoor 3 (Maximum Zoom)
There is a strong turquoise fringing showing in this shot. It is true that all super zooms have this problem (or more commonly purple fringing) to a degree, but this photo suggests the Finepix S1000fd suffers more than most others. This problem occurs in bright conditions, with light coloured subjects in the shot. It is likely that the problem will be evident even in smaller prints.

With the lens fully extended focusing levels are softer than average.

Outdoor 4 (Building)
This is another photo I would like to have seen a touch lighter. In the shaded areas there is a loss of definition in the photo. In the brighter sections the photo is much sharper than when the zoom lens was fully extended.

Outdoor Portrait
Working much closer to the subject makes for a sharply focused photo. The colours are quite strong, but they do lend a lot of warmth to the photo. I have used a white balance setting of shady to add some extra punch to the colours in the shot.

The pop up flash unit produces plenty of brightness. This is a sharp photo. Perhaps some extra warmth in the skin tones would have improved the photo further.

Indoor Portrait without Flash
Using the natural lighting available the Finepix S1000fd manages to produce a light, bright photo. This works well for the darker areas of the hair. Noise is controlled well in the shot.

Colours
There is plenty of colour in my test shots, without the camera going over the top. With strong blues and greens this should help to produce colourful landscapes.

Macro
In super macro mode the Finepix S1000fd is able to get in very close to the subject. This helps to deliver a bright, clear photo with good level of detail. In fact this macro shot stands up very well against other similar digital cameras.

ISO 400 and ISO 1600
Fuji digital cameras tend to handle higher ISO settings as well as or better than other brands. That is the case with the Finepix S1000fd. Although noise is still apparent in the darker or more shaded areas of the shots the camera controls noise levels better than most cameras manage.

Overall
I am happy enough with the Finepix S1000fd. Ironically the one problem shot is the one where the zoom is fully extended. This after all is the key test photo for this camera. I also found some of my test photos a little dark.

Shutter Lag
Taking a single photo with the Finepix S1000fd clocked a reasonable time of 0.42 seconds. All my other tests produced slow times. Five photos took 19.63 seconds, a photo with flash 1.68 seconds and five photos with flash 20.47 seconds.

It took 3.08 seconds to turn the camera on and take a photo.

Ease of use rating:Above Average. With the extra manual features the Finepix S1000fd is not as easy to pick up and get going with as a more straightforward point and shoot camera. The reason it earns an above average Ease of Use Rating is that compared to other, similar cameras you are likely to get to grips with it that bit quicker.

Alternatives
If you would like to try a super zoom digital camera with a longer lens, better overall picture quality and one or two extra features try the Nikon Coolpix P80.

Verdict:
The Fuji Finepix S1000fd does most things well enough, apart from taking photos with the zoom fully extended. It is as easy to use as any super zoom camera and is also relatively compact.
